Pacific Lung Health Centre/PRIISME COPD Conferences
"A Breath of Fresh Air"
September 20, 2005
The Pacific Lung Health Centre at Providence Health Care, St. Paul's Hospital, is pleased to present an educational series this fall on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). COPD is the fifth most common cause of death in North America today and is the only leading cause of death that is rising in prevalence. This impacts on the lives of many individuals and their families, but also has an escalating impact on health care costs and services.
The education programs are targeted to physicians, allied healthcare workers, COPD patients and the general public. The programs are free and these activities have been made possible in part through an unrestricted educational grant from GlaxoSmithKline as part of the PRIISME project for the optimal management of chronic disease. There is the opportunity for physicians and later for allied health care workers to obtain continuing medical education credits for attending the programs.
The first COPD educational session is aimed at physicians and will take place Saturday October 1st, 2005 from 7:30am – 12pm at St. Paul's Hospital. The session, entitled "A Breath of Fresh Air", has an outstanding program that has been developed with family physicians and respirologists to assist general practitioners in meeting the challenges they face in day-to-day clinical management of COPD.
The second fall session is an education program for the public with the focus on COPD Management and Medications. Dr. Don Sin, Respirologist, Ms. Bev Beaudin, Respiratory Therapist and Mr. Greg Shepherd, Pharmacist, will present information in order to educate COPD patients and their families regarding their role in managing COPD and their medications. This forum takes place October 13th, 2005 from 12:30 pm - 3:30pm at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Vancouver and is open to all COPD patients, their families and anyone else interested in learning more about COPD.
Finally, Pacific Lung Health Centre and PRIISME will be presenting a program for allied healthcare workers (pharmacists, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, nurses, dieticians) with a focus on COPD and the healthcare team. This education session will allow participants to recognize the importance each of their roles are in chronic disease management and allow them to become more familiar with the COPD guidelines through case studies. This program is scheduled or October 17th, 2005 from 5:00pm - 8:00pm at The Terminal City Club in Vancouver.
The COPD clinic at St. Paul's hospital in partnership with the PRIISME Chronic Disease Management Program is excited about putting together the first of a series of education on COPD management this fall. For more information on any of the programs or to register, please contact:
