Your doctor has requested that you have a breathing test to determine if your airways are hyperactive when exposed to certain substances. These tests are not painful and will take about one hour. Some medications will interfere with these tests and should be withheld prior to your test if possible. They are as follows:
- Do Not Take:
- Antihistamines such as Seldane, Benedryl, Reactine or Claritin for 3 days prior to the start of your test.
- Leukotriene receptor antagonists such as Accolate or Singulair for 24 hours prior to testing.
- Theophylline containing drugs for 48 hours prior to the start of your test. These drugs include: Theo-dur, Theolair, Choledyl, Amesac, Phyllocontin, Respid, Bethiodyl, Uniphyl and Aminophylline.
- Long-acting bronchodilators such as Serevent, Oxeze, Foradil, Advair, or Symbicort for 48 hours prior to testing.
- Bronchodilators for at least 8 hours prior to testing. These might include:
Ventolin, Bricanyl, Atrovent, Berotec, Combivent, Isuprel, Alupent, Airomir
- Continue To Take:
- All steroids containing medications such as:
Beclovent, Qvar, Vanceril, Bronalide, Pulmicort, Prednisone, Flovent
- If possible, try to avoid foods such as coffee, tea, cola drinks, and chocolate on the day of your test. After the test, you may restart all your medications in the usual manner.
