Why Is It Ordered?

A bronchoscopy is an examination of the lungs by means of a bronchoscope (fibre-optic tube).

How Is The Test Done?

A "small" flexible tube is passed through the nose or mouth into the lungs.

How Long Will It Take?

The procedure takes approximately 30-45 minutes.

Getting Ready

You will be asked to not eat from midnight the night before.

You will be asked to sign a consent form.

The nurse will insert a needle which will remain in your vein throughout the test (called a saline lock).

You may be given a pill under the tongue and an injection 1/2 to 1 hour before the examination. This medication will make your mouth dry and help to relax you.

What Can You Expect During The Test?

  1. You will be admitted in ward 8D (Medical Short Stay) 2 hours before the procedure.
  2. You will be taken to the procedure on a stretcher.
  3. At the start of the procedure the physician or respiratory therapist will have you gargle and will spray your nose and throat with a local anesthetic.
  4. You need to organize for somebody to take you home after the procedure
