Why Is It Ordered?
A bronchoscopy is an examination of the lungs by means of a bronchoscope (fibre-optic tube).
How Is The Test Done?
A small flexible tube is passed through the nose or mouth into the lungs.
How Long Will It Take?
The procedure takes approximately 30-45 minutes.
Getting Ready for the Test
You will be asked to refrain from eating and drinking from midnight the night before your test.
You will be asked to sign a consent form.
The nurse will insert a needle in your arm which will remain in your vein throughout the test (called a saline lock).
What Can You Expect During The Test?
- You will be admitted in ward 8D (Medical Short Stay) 2 hours before the procedure.
- You will be taken to the procedure on a stretcher.
- At the start of the procedure the physician or respiratory therapist will have you gargle and will spray your nose and throat with a local anesthetic.
- Please organize for somebody to take you home after the bronchoscopy because you may feel drowsy after the procedure.
